Moong Dal Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal (red moong dhal or split yellow lentils)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger or 1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
  • Lemon juice (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the Moong Dal:

    • Rinse the moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Cook the Moong Dal:

    • In a large pot, combine the rinsed moong dal with 3 cups of water.
    • Add turmeric powder and bring it to a boil.
    • Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the dal is soft and fully cooked. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Prepare the Tadka (Tempering):

    • While the dal is cooking, heat oil or ghee in a small pan over medium heat.
    • Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
    • Add minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for another minute until the raw smell disappears.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
    • Add red chili powder and cook for another minute.
  4. Combine the Dal and Tadka:

    • Once the moong dal is cooked, pour the tadka mixture into the pot of dal.
    • Stir well to combine all the flavors.
    • Add salt to taste and simmer the dal for another 5-7 minutes.
  5. Garnish and Serve:

    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
    • Add a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

Enjoy your comforting bowl of Moong Dal!
